ADVENT – A TIME OF WAITING, HOPE AND PREPARATION
This season of Advent invites us to pause amidst the noise and busyness of the world—it reminds of two profound truths: the coming of Christ in history and His continual presence in our lives today.
From a Carmelite perspective, Advent is a season of contemplative longing. It is a journey seeking union with God marked by silence, vigilance and love. The Carmelite saints like St. John of the Cross and St. Teresa of Avila, speak to this inner preparation. Their writings encourage us to “make straight the paths” of our hearts, clearing away distractions to make room for God’s transformative presence.
The Advent wreath, with its candles symbolizing hope, faith, joy, and peace, reflects this journey. Each week, as we light another candle, we can reflect on how we are growing in these virtues. Are we cultivating hope, are we nurturing our faith, are we finding joy in the simple gifts of life? Are we sharing the joy with others and are we working to build peace within ourselves and our communities?
Advent also calls us to justice. As we prepare for Christmas, we are reminded that our waiting is active—we are called to embody Christ’s love through acts of service, compassion and justice.
As we journey through these weeks of Advent, may we embrace the stillness, the anticipation, and the call to deeper intimacy with the God who draws near.
